The OPTIMAX 4 fume cupboard is a fusion of modern technology, eco-conscious design, laboratory safety, and enhanced user experience.
When it comes to laboratory apparatus, size matters! The OPTIMAX 4 is more compact than Clean Air’s popular APEX fume cupboards, but it doesn’t compromise on space. This innovative fume cupboard builds on the positive feedback that lab teams have given for the APEX series. The OPTIMAX 4 benefits from glass to three sides, a design that users tell us they love. Substituting glass for traditional twin-skinned walls allows more light in and adds space to the working chamber, so the operator enjoys a larger, lighter, brighter working area experience.
The compact dimensions of the OPTIMAX 4 mean the benefits of the APEX series can now be delivered in smaller labs.

Not only is the innovative OPTIMAX 4 jam-packed with all the user-friendly features you expect from our fume cupboards, in addition, one stand-out feature of this model truly sets it apart from its contemporaries. The OPTIMAX 4 is the first fume cupboard to be optimised for containment using advanced 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
Using CFD techniques we have optimised and tested aspects of the OPTIMAX 4 design. Scientific data results prove it takes less than 90 seconds to remove 99.9% of contaminants from the entire fume cupboard chamber. We can also use our evidenced modelling to show our clients the most effective way to use their fume cupboard.
The British Standard for testing fume cupboards (BS EN 14175) relies on sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), identified by the International Panel on Climate Change as the most potent greenhouse gas. When using SF6 for fume cupboard testing, a type test will release the equivalent of 3,000kg CO2 per test and each on-site test will release around 1,000kg CO2e.
All Clean Air Fume Cupboards have been designed to meet the requirements of BS EN 14175. However, by utilising CFD for the OPTIMAX 4 we have hugely reduced the need for SF6 and have generated unparalleled data-driven insights into fume cupboard performance.
CFD has allowed us to evaluate airflow under various conditions; test different extraction rates, sash positions, and equipment configurations; and optimise fume containment and lab safety.
