Smarter Containment, Designed for Today’s Labs
The OPTIMAX 4 fume cupboard is designed for laboratories that need exceptional containment performance in a more compact, light-filled footprint. Optimised for safety, efficiency and usability, it’s ideal for universities, research facilities, healthcare environments and commercial labs where space is at a premium but standards remain uncompromising. With glass on three sides and a carefully engineered airflow profile, the OPTIMAX 4 creates a brighter, more open working environment while maintaining reliable fume containment to BS EN 14175.
Developed using advanced airflow modelling and real-world lab insight, the OPTIMAX 4 offers a smarter approach to fume cupboard design. Its efficient containment performance supports lower energy demands. And its reduced reliance on repeated traditional testing methods during development results in lower embodied carbon without compromising safety. The outcome is a future-focused fume cupboard that balances performance, sustainability and operator experience, making it a strong choice for laboratories looking to invest in safer, more responsible equipment that works hard in smaller spaces.

Built by Experts in Laboratory Containment
While the OPTIMAX 4 is a newer addition to our fume cupboard range, it’s backed by decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing high-performance fume cupboards for universities, research institutions, healthcare environments, and industrial laboratories across the UK. From complex, high-risk applications to space-constrained teaching labs, Clean Air is trusted to deliver safe, compliant, and future-ready containment solutions, and the OPTIMAX 4 is no exception.

Clean Air is the UK’s leading fume cupboard supplier for sustainability, committed to becoming carbon neutral by reducing waste, reusing materials, and promoting responsible packaging with our suppliers.
We offer full service and maintenance for fume cupboards. Our DBS-checked engineers test to BS EN 14175 standards, ensuring your system is safe and operational.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the most common things labs ask us when exploring a more sustainable, high-performance fume cupboard solution.
Yes. The OPTIMAX 4 is designed for education, research, healthcare, and industrial labs, particularly where space is limited but performance can’t be compromised. It’s ideal for modern labs that need excellent containment, strong visibility, and efficient use of space.
The OPTIMAX 4 offers the same high safety standards you’d expect, but in a more compact, light-filled design. With glass on three sides and a carefully engineered airflow profile, it delivers a brighter working environment while maintaining reliable containment performance.
Absolutely. One of the key advantages of the OPTIMAX 4 is its compact footprint. It brings many of the benefits of larger, high-performance fume cupboards into labs where space, layout, or visibility are critical considerations.
The OPTIMAX 4 has been designed to meet BS EN 14175, but with a more responsible approach to how performance is developed and validated. Traditional fume cupboard design relies heavily on repeated physical testing using sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) during development.
By using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, Clean Air significantly reduced the need for repeated SF₆-based testing during the OPTIMAX 4’s development. This allowed us to optimise airflow, containment, and usability in a more sustainable way, without compromising safety, compliance, or real-world performance.
Sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) is used in fume cupboard testing under BS EN 14175 due to its ability to detect containment performance. However, SF₆ is recognised as one of the most potent greenhouse gases, with a very high global warming potential. One kg of SF6 traps as much heat as 24,300 kg of CO2 over a century. Each traditional type test and on-site test can result in significant CO₂-equivalent emissions.
By using advanced modelling during the design and optimisation of the OPTIMAX 4, Clean Air has significantly reduced reliance on repeated SF₆-based testing. This approach delivers deeper insight into airflow behaviour, supports safer laboratory environments, and helps minimise environmental impact, offering a smarter, more sustainable path forward for the industry.
