The Clean Air Fume Cupboard Fume Scrubber is a high-efficiency rear-mounted wet scrubber engineered specifically for laboratory fume cupboards.

Clean Air specialises in fume cupboard fume scrubbers. We do not supply industrial process scrubbers. Every unit is designed for fume cupboard airflow rates, laboratory contaminant profiles and compact installation.

The rear-mounted design allows the scrubber to fit neatly behind and beneath the fume cupboard, simplifying installation and reducing ductwork complexity.

All systems are designed and manufactured in-house at our Greater Manchester facility and installed by specialist engineers across the UK and overseas.

We have a wide range of fume scrubbers designed to remove or neutralise the harmful substances emitted from chemicals.

Clean Air fume cupboard wet scrubbers are engineered to deliver reliable performance in demanding laboratory conditions. Independent MCERTS-accredited testing validates scrubbing efficiency, while corrosion-resistant construction ensures long-term operation when handling aggressive chemical fumes.

Clean Air units are packed bed wet scrubbers designed specifically for fume cupboard exhaust. They use polypropylene Pall ring packing to provide excellent two-phase gas-liquid contact and distribution, delivering high neutralisation efficiency for corrosive laboratory fumes.

Key design parameters include a total equivalent packing depth of 2.5 metres and a specific packing surface area of 209 m² per m³, providing high liquid hold-up for improved adsorption.

The system uses dual-stage contaminant treatment with both co-current and counter-current scrubbing. Co-current scrubbing provides primary absorption, while counter-current scrubbing provides secondary polishing.

This allows contaminants to be effectively treated twice within a compact fume cupboard wet scrubber design.

Fume Cupboard Fume Scrubber

Here are some of the most common things we’re asked about our fume scrubber systems.

What is a fume cupboard wet scrubber?

A fume cupboard wet scrubber is a packed bed scrubber designed to neutralise corrosive or hazardous fumes from laboratory fume cupboard exhaust by contacting the contaminated air with a scrubbing solution.

Are Clean Air fume cupboard scrubbers independently tested?

Yes. The Clean Air Fume Cupboard Fume Scrubber is the only unit independently tested by MCERTS-accredited personnel, achieving efficiencies exceeding 99.8 percent across contaminant concentrations above normal fume cupboard operation.

What is the advantage of a rear-mounted fume cupboard scrubber?

A rear-mounted scrubber fits behind and beneath the fume cupboard, simplifying installation, reducing ductwork, and improving service access compared with traditional packed towers.
Minimising the ductwork distance between the fume cupboard and the fume scrubber is extremely important when perchloric acid is being used because it can crystalise inside the ductwork and spontaneously explode.

What type of scrubber is used?

Clean Air units are packed bed wet scrubbers using polypropylene Pall ring packing, with a total equivalent packing depth of 2.5 metres and a specific packing surface area of 209 m² per m³. They use both co-current and counter-current scrubbing to maximise treatment efficiency.

Can the scrubber handle highly corrosive acid fumes?

Yes. The scrubber is constructed from corrosion-resistant polypropylene and is designed to handle highly corrosive fumes, such as strong acids. Clean Air’s fume scrubber has been widely used to neutralise strong acid fumes such as perchloric acid (HClO₄), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and Aqua Regia.

Can chemical dosing be automated?

Yes. An optional automated chemical dosing system is available where precise neutralisation control is required. The system includes pH monitoring with constant or proportional dosing control, helping maintain stable scrubbing performance and reduce manual intervention.
The automated dosing system typically includes:
– Wall-mounted solenoid-driven pH dosing pump with digital interface
– Constant or proportional dosing capability
– In-line pH probe for continuous monitoring
– Chemical suction lance with foot valve, strainer and float switch
– Chemical injector and interconnecting pipework
An optional auto-dump facility can also be supplied where required.

Do you supply other types of fume scrubber?

No. Clean Air specialises in fume cupboard fume scrubbers only. Our wet scrubbers are engineered specifically for laboratory fume cupboards rather than general industrial processes.

How is a fume cupboard scrubber sized for laboratory airflow requirements?

Clean Air fume cupboard wet scrubbers are engineered specifically for laboratory face velocities and fume cupboard airflow conditions. Each system is configured to match the airflow characteristics of the individual fume cupboard to ensure effective treatment of exhaust fumes.
Typical design parameters include:
Volume flow range: 0.22 to 0.51 m³/s depending on model
Face velocity: 0.4 m/s at a 500 mm sash opening
Typical pressure drop: 800 Pa
Face velocity: 0.5 m/s at a 500 mm sash opening
Typical pressure drop: 1200 Pa
Scrubber depth: 300 mm
Packing surface area: 66.7 to 122.7 m² depending on model
Each rear-mounted fume cupboard scrubber is designed and configured to match the specific airflow requirements of the fume cupboard installation.
