What Does a Fume Scrubber Do?

Fume scrubbers remove or neutralise the harmful substances emitted from chemicals. They do this by contacting the target compounds with a scrubbing solution.  The solution can be water or a reagent to address specific chemicals.

We have an experienced chemical engineer and a team of design engineers. They are available to advise on the most suitable equipment and specifications for your specific requirements. Our specialists in chemical and fan engineering technology have the expertise to design complex fume removal systems.

Our quick and efficient teams of site installation engineers install and commission across the UK and overseas.

All plant is manufactured within our Manchester factory. We can produce fume scrubbers and ductwork systems up to 45 m3/s capacity.

Rear-Mounted Fume Cupboard Fume Scrubber

Our fume scrubber is the only unit on the market to have been independently tested by MCERTS* accredited personnel.  Its efficiency exceeded 99.8% when tested across a range of contaminant gas concentrations, exceeding those encountered in normal fume cupboard operation.

Compact, fully optimised operation

Our fume scrubber fits neatly behind and beneath the fume cupboard. This allows for greater lab space utilisation alongside speedier and easier installation compared with existing packed bed fume scrubber designs.

With simple and easy to remove access panels, this fume scrubber can easily be serviced and maintained, keeping any potential downtime to an absolute minimum.

Our fume scrubber is the only unit on the market to have been independently tested by MCERTS* accredited personnel.

Featuring reliable and efficient cutting-edge technologies

Clean Air units are packed bed, wet scrubbers utilising both co-current and counter-current gas scrubbing technologies (Co-current = gas and scrubbing liquor flow in same direction – Counter-current = gas and scrubbing liquor flow in opposite directions).

The unique design of our fume scrubbing unit ensures that gas is in intimate contact with the wetted packing media for the maximum amount of time with an equivalent depth of the packing of 2.5 metres.

Superior efficiency and dependability

This versatile and highly efficient fume scrubber unit is ideal for a wide array of applications including chemical, mineral and metal analysis and inspection. Product reliability is extensively proven, with a number of units currently serving fume cupboards used on a 24-hour cycle with extensive exposure to strong acids.

Key features

Under independent testing, Clean Air’s unit dealt effectively with contaminant gas concentrations exceeding those encountered in normal fume cupboards.

*MCERTS is the Environment Agency’s Monitoring Certification Scheme. It provides the framework for businesses to meet quality requirements. Compliance with MCERTS gives confidence in the monitoring of emissions to the environment.

How Fume Scrubbers Work?

Our fume scrubbers operate via a sophisticated yet simple three-step process which safely and efficiently eliminates harmful environmental toxins and chemicals including a wide range of acids and alkalines.

Step 1

Airflow from the fume cupboard (or another source) is split into 2 equal air streams before entering the fume scrubber at the top of the two outer co-current packed sections. The air then enters a packed bed of random packings.

Step 2

Airflow travels downwards through the wetted packing before turning 180° into the central chamber. This is where the divided air streams come together before passing upwards (counter-currently) through the central wetted packed bed. The processed airstream then enters and passes through a vertical droplet separator before exiting the unit through the flanged outlet connection.

Step 3

The scrubbing liquor is re-circulated around the scrubber via a magnetically-driven polypropylene pump and a PVC pipework system. The base of the unit forms a sump for the re-circulation liquor. The scrubbing liquor within this reservoir is maintained at a constant level by the continuous addition of clean water from the auto-fill valve and chemicals from the optional pH dosing system. This counteracts the effect of both evaporation and neutralisation.

Our robust fume scrubber system is constructed from corrosion-resistant plastic materials (polypropylene and PVC), ensuring the fume cupboard can remain fully operational within aggressive chemical environments.
